Holocaust means "sacrifice" in the Greek origin. Adolf Hiltler and his German army led the genocide, or systematic killing of more than 6 million Jews that took place from 1933 through 1945. This "sacrificial" killing is forever referred to as the "Holocaust". Born in Austria in 1889, Adolf Hitler became the leader of Germany who wanted to create a "perfect race" of German people. This led to great discrimination, bigotry, oppression and humiliation of the Jewish people. Victims of the Holocaust were gathered up and sent to concentration camps around Germany where some were shot, hanged, and subject to horrible medical experiments. Some were even worked to death. Hardly any person of Jewish heritage was spared, even if they were wealthy, very religious or one of the soldiers from the first World War that actually fought for Germany.
Some noble people volunteered to rescue those in the concentration camps, which meant they were risking their own lives. These individuals represent the finest and noblest of the human spirits. In 1945, the Nazi regime collapsed under the charge of the allied nations and the world learned to the full extent about the hatred of Jews. After the Nazi regime collapsed, many people left Europe and tried to remake their demolished lives in the United States, Israel, and elsewhere.
