To monitor and concentrate the Jewish count or population, as well as facilitate later deportation of the Jews, the Germans created ghettos, also known as transit camps for Jews. German authorities also established many forced-labor camps for non-Jews, too.
Many Jews went into hiding. One of the most important stories to come out of this is that of Anne Frank. She wrote a now famous diary which documented how she and her family went into hiding to escape Nazi persecution. They were eventually captured and transported to a concentration camp where she died.
Her diary, discovered after her death, continues to tell her story and the plight suffered by the Jewish people. This has given great social awareness to the horrors of the Holocaust.
